Movie: Anatomy of a Fall

Origin: France

Time: 2hr 30 min

This year's Golden Globe best foreign language film, “Anatomy of a Fall," was released on February 2nd in India, and one couldn't wait to witness this French movie in nearby cinemas.

The movie begins with an interview scene where writer “Sandra Voyter,” played by Sandra Huller, asks the interviewee to leave due to the loud noise of music that Samuel Maleski, her husband, is playing on the rooftop. The scene takes a gradual shift when the son Daniel discovers his dad's body lying below his attic window. This made Mrs. Voyter the only suspect and Daniel the only witness.

When there is no evidence to prove the death, the only thing one can rely on are various hypotheses related to the murder scene, the victim's personal life, and their mental health. The courtroom drama, eloquent judges, an impartial jury, and victim Sandra Voyter.

Let's get into some interesting aspects of the movie:

Use of still frames and lazy camera work:

Unlike in movies, where we get to witness scenes combined with various shots such as Pan, Tilt, and Dolly,

However, in “Anatomy of a Fall,” most of the shots are still, and filmmaker Justin Triet focused on jump cuts to transition from one scene to another. Though it is not desirable with respect to filmmaking in general, it seems to work for “Anatomy of a Fall.”

Made the subjects move more than the camera:

Due to the lack of camera movement in films, it gave subjects in the film the relative freedom to move freely within their frames. Such a cinematic experience can also be fruitful when depicting the stories through the lens of character rather than the camera. Still, it is subjective because the masses are used to watching movies where cameras speak for stories. One may find it boring and slow-paced.

Shots of son Daniel playing piano:

If you watched “Anatomy of a Fall,"  we can see the filmmaker took several shots of Daniel playing the piano. Some viewers complained about the unnecessary shot with respect to the plot in the movie.

However, the idea could be to show the relationship between son and father, as Samuel Maleski was once a musician, and for his son, his presence is still there in the form of music.

The end was not predictable.

Some might say “Anatomy of a Fall"  is a bit too stretched for a simple and repetitive plot. Still, within the plot, there are a lot of complexities of humans, relationships, and different theories of murder, which can keep one hooked on the movie. Still, the shift that takes place in the end can make an entirely twisted narrative from what one has been viewing since the beginning of the movie. It could lead the viewer either to a satisfactory or unsatisfactory ending.
